Horse manure (also referred to as dung, excrement, stud piles or poo) is natural excrement created by a horse.
It can be used for many things, including fertilizer and fuel.
Appearance[]
Horse manure generally comes in medium-sized potato or egg-shaped 'capsules' and as more are excreted through the horse's anus, builds up a large pile, which can vary in size depending on the horse but it usually the size of a mole hill.
The color can depend on the horse's diet, but usually are either a dark beige, a dark brown or green. Light beige or light brown droppings usually darken over time.
Texture[]
Horse poo, when fresh, has a texture similar to wet grass or hay and is usually quite moist and warm.
As the poop ages, it usually dries out but has the same hay-like texture.
Smell[]
Horse poo usually smells very earthy and very much like horse flatulence (a horse's fart). It depends on the horse's diet.
Frequency[]
A typical adult horse tends to poo 8 to 12 times a day and produces approximately 15kg of dung a day and approximately 5,475kg a year. It can depend on the horse, its diet and its metabolism, however.
Flatulence[]
As food ferments in the horse's hindgut, gases are released. These gases leave the horse's anus via flatulence (or farting). A healthy horse's fart tends to smell very similar to that horse's dung. A typical adult horse tends to fart 8 to 15 times a day, but this can differ depending on the horse, its diet and how active it is.
