Horses are very demanding in terms of care and this is just the place to learn!

Basic Jobs[]

Horses are a lot of work and require daily attention. Without daily management and care they can easily develop health problems. Some basic jobs that you need to be able to do consist of:

  • Grooming
  • Mucking out
  • Worming/drenching
  • Feeding
  • Watering
  • Turning out
  • Hoof management
  • Exercising

Grooming a horse[]

Horses constantly get dirty and sweaty. Daily grooming isn't required but highly recommended. You must groom your horse before and after riding. The sequence of which brush you use should generally consist of:

  • Curry Comb a hard brush usually made of rubber with ridges. This brush is used to get the mud from a horse's legs and the loosen dirt and grime. To brush with a curry comb brush in circles.
  • Body Brush a hard bristled brush that you will brush the horse all over with on its body. This removes the dust and grime. It is recommended to clean the brush occasionally to prevent the brush from becoming too dirty.
  • Soft Brush a soft brush used as a finishing brush. This brush is to make sure your horse is shiny and clean.
  • Comb this brush is used to detangle the horse's mane and tail. Be careful when using this brush as you may accidentally hurt the horse.
  • Hoof Pick this is used to clean the horse's feet. There are usually two sides, a metal nail side, and a brush side. Scrape the mud and stones out from the horse's hoof, then brush it clean.
