Gray is a modifier of coat color in horses. Gray horses are born colored (bay, black, chestnut, etc) and lighten in color as they age. There are different stages of grey. A single horse may go through all stages of grey or only one or two. Most grey horses end up nearly white.

  • Light gray
    • This usually appears to be white.
  • Flea-bitten
    • White coat flecked with brown, red or black specks.
  • Iron
    • Dark gray coat with no or minimal dappling
