The canter is a 3 beat gait that comes between trot and gallop. In the first beat of canter, the outside hind leg comes off the ground. In the second beat, the inside hind and outside foreleg come off the ground. In the third beat, the inside front leg, the leading leg, comes off the ground. There is then one beat of suspension.

To ask for the canter, you should press with your outside leg, and close your inside hand. This works for both ways but never pull with your hand or kick with your leg.
