A young writer, Anna Sewell, hated seeing carriage horses in bearing reins. These are straps that forced horses to carry their heads at an uncomfortable angle. She wrote a book about the life of a carriage horse, Black Beauty. She included other characters, such as Merrylegs and Ginger. The book is a classic and led to bearing reins being outlawed in the UK.
